A Word From Your President

Dear Fellow Members:

Please review the Scriptus and/or the website (waukeshabar.org) for specifics regarding the Ethics Seminar (November 9), the GAL Seminar (December 8), and the Holiday Party (December 8).  There is also information regarding various section meetings.  Specifically, the first meeting of the Litigation Section is October 13.

The State Bar of Wisconsin is currently accepting applications for the Local Bar Grant Competition.  If you would like additional information regarding same, please either check out the State Bar website (www.wisbar.org) or contact me.  The deadline for applications to be received is February 3, 2012.
Speaking of bar grants, as you are aware, the WCBA received one of the grants last year to place wireless printers in some of the family courtrooms.  Please stay tuned for more information, as the printers are almost installed.  Once they are operational, we will provide you with information about how to use them.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me or any member of the Board.

Very truly yours,

Michelle E. Martin
President

Scriptus/WebsiteDanni Caldwell reported that the September issue will likely include a warning to bar members to update their paid membership or risk being eliminated from the distribution list of the Scriptus newsletter.

WCBA Sections Issues: Revised language of the social media policy was reviewed and approved on motions from Danni Caldwell and Ron Sonderhouse.  The adopted policy is as follows:

Social Media Policy:

Waukesha County Bar Association members shall not form any social media group (including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Blogs, and the like) on behalf of the WCBA so as to give the impression that the individual member or group is acting on behalf of the WCBA.  Further, no individual member or group shall give any representation that the individual or its group's members' view is the view of the entire WCBA section or the WCBA Board unless the individual or group received prior approval from the WCBA Board.

Further, the WCBA Board encourages the use of WCBA member's email for WCBA sections; however the use of said emails shall not be for the purpose of solicitation of or to express an individual's opinion that may not be that of the WCBA as a whole.  To this end, it is the WCBA's policy to not release member's email addresses for personal use or for another's personal use unless otherwise approved by the WCBA Board.

2011-2012 Events Schedule: Location of events and status of events were discussed as follows:

Marriott

Christy D'Angelo is pursuing a contract with the Marriott as a venue for the WCBA Annual Meeting, Judge's Luncheon and Support Staff Luncheon.  The Marriott has promised flexibility on most budget items (i.e. room rental fees, setup costs, etc.) with the exception of food and beverage expenses.

Ethics Seminar

The Ethics seminar is scheduled for November 9, 2011 at Brookfield Suites; registration 8am-8:30am; Seminar 8:30am to noon.  Sue Herro reported that the program will be a presentation of Attorney Barry White and Attorney Mike Berzowski of Weiss Berzowski Brady.  The program "Ethics for Wisconsin Attorneys" includes a case law review, an interactive presentation, and pre-approved CLE format.

The presentation of Attorney Dan Murray will be tabled for a future event.

Registration materials will be distributed 60 days in advance to bar members.  This event is free to all paid members.

Holiday Party

The holiday party is scheduled for December 8, 2011 at the Delafield Brewhaus.

New Business

1.    An update of current officers and board members will be submitted to Wisconsin Lawyer by Michelle Martin.

2.    The 2011 tax return for WCBA has been completed and filed following the end of the fiscal year.

3.    Christy D'Angelo discussed an opportunity presented by Cross Borders Education, LLC, a company that provides fee based access to video replay of CLE seminars and other presentations.

Cross Borders would like to videotape the upcoming CLE being offered by the Estate Planning and Probate section of the WCBA.  This CLE would then be added to their library of seminars that users can access online.  It was decided that it would be up to the individual sections, and all speakers involved, to approve the use of this service as the sections are responsible for their own CLE presentations.  Any cost sharing can be negotiated by the sections themselves and would benefit the section.

The Board agreed that the upcoming CLE can be a test case and Christy D'Angelo will monitor the process.

Adjournment: A motion was made by Danni Caldwell, seconded by Christy D'Angelo.  The meeting was adjourned at 1pm.

Next Meeting:  The next meeting is scheduled for September 15, 2011 at 12:00 noon in Room G55 of the Waukesha County Administration Building.*

Respectfully submitted,
Lori J. Fabian
Secretary/Treasurer

* The next meeting is scheduled for October 20, 2011 at 12:00 noon in Room G55 of the Waukesha County Administration Building.*

From the Clerk of Courts

Circuit Courts begin testing new Courtroom Audio and Visual Presentation Tools

Phase One of a Courtroom Technology Upgrade is essentially complete.  Two courtrooms, Judge Kieffer's criminal courtroom and Judge Van De Water's family courtroom will have Audio, Visual Presentation, and Video Conferencing software and hardware installed, as part of county funded Capital Project designed to improve and expand the communication and case presentation capabilities of all Courtrooms and Hearing Rooms.

Technology included in the new A/V systems installed in each area include sound amplification and microphone improvements, new assistive listening devices, case presentation tools including document projection and visual presentation tools, and capabilities for attorneys to bring in and utilize their personal laptops and smart devices like tablet PC's to present audio and electronic images or video, real-time image annotation, and multi-camera video conferencing tools.
The project is being coordinated at the direction of Chief Judge J. Mac Davis and Clerk of Circuit Court Kathleen Madden.   The two pilot courtrooms are live-testing the new systems for a period of 60 to 90 days to see how everything works in real life and then to "tweak" the new systems as necessary to re-work and address problems or improvements identified prior to rolling out the new systems to all 15 remaining venues.

We conducted a significant number of orientation and training sessions beginning with court staff and Court officials.  Likewise orientation, system training, and "brain-storming" sessions have been conducted with a variety of our business partners such as the District Attorney, Corporation Counsel, State Public Defender, local BAR members and other interested practicing attorneys.

The remaining courtrooms and hearing rooms will be upgraded between January and September of next year.  We are very excited to have these improvements and look forward to getting everyone involved in applying and using these new tools.  For additional information please check out the new Technology section under the Clerk of Circuit Court Office pages on the Waukesha County government website . www.waukeshacounty.gov

Thanks!
The Court Technology Team
