A Word From Your President

Dear Members:

One of the most important parts of our judicial system in the United States is the ability for people, in most cases, to choose whether to have their case heard by a judge or by a jury of their peers. September is Juror Appreciation Month. The theme for Juror Appreciation Month this year is Jurors Serve Justice; Justice Serves Us All.

Last year more than 20,000 Wisconsin residents served on juries throughout the state. That is 20,000 people who gave up hours, days and sometimes weeks of their time to play their part in protecting the constitutional rights of all the people of Wisconsin. I encourage you to take some time out this month to acknowledge their hard work and to thank anyone you know that has served on a jury over the past year.

On a completely different note, it is time once again to memorialize the members of the Waukesha County Bar Association for generations to come. Every member will have the opportunity to have his/her picture taken for the composite photograph that will be hung in the courthouse. Members will also have the ability to order, at their own cost, a copy of the composite photograph or their individual pictures.

Pictures will be taken at the Holiday Reception in December, the Judge’s Update Luncheon in January and one other date to be determined. Please mark your calendars so you don’t miss the opportunity to be immortalized with your fellow Waukesha County Bar Association Members!!

WCBA Board Minutes - Thursday, August 15, 2010

Attendance: Christine D'Angelo, Danni Caldwell, Vickie Schroeder, Linda Coyle, Lori Fabian and Sam Benedict.

Call to Order: The meeting was duly called to order by President Christy D'Angelo.

Minutes of the July, 2010 Board of Directors Meeting:   A motion was made, seconded, and adopted to approve the Minutes of the July 15, 2010 Board of Directors meeting.

Treasurer's and Membership Report:   The Treasurer's and Membership Report was reviewed. There were no issues regarding the Report.

Old Business and Committee Reports

State Board of Governors' Report    There has been no meeting since the June meeting and another meeting of the Board of Governors is scheduled for the end of September. The Strategic Plan was discussed regarding voluntary versus involuntary bar membership at the June meeting. A Petition for the Supreme Court to review the status of voluntary membership was submitted, and it failed by 1 vote. More discussion was had about the diploma privilege and enforcement of the unauthorized practice of law.

Scriptus/Website   The Scriptus will be out early next week. Investiture information for Kathy Stilling will be on the website.

IRS Filing Issues Michelle Martin provided an email with an update on the IRS filing. Michelle sent a copy of the extension to the IRS with an explanation letter. We are waiting to hear back from the IRS.

Ethics Seminar Topics and Speakers still need to be decided for the Ethics Seminar in November. We discussed having presentations on mediation and new trust account rules. We plan to get the invites out earlier this year, via electronic means. RSVP's will go to Doug Swanson.

Waukesha County Bar Member Portraits Christy D'Angelo has discussed the portraits with her photographer contact. Her contact needs more information regarding what exactly we want done, times, etc. We may be able to have the photos viewed online and members can order directly from there. We discussed the possibility of having photos available to be taken at the Holiday party, at the courthouse on various dates and at the Judge's Update. Christy will obtain a quote from her contact.

Adjournment: A motion was made, seconded, and adopted to adjourn.

Next Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 16, 2010, at 12:00 p.m. location to be determined

Retirement Party

Please join Courthouse staff at a farewell gathering for Diane Crowley, Family Division Supervisor, as she retires after 39 years at the County. Cake and punch will be served in the Jury Assembly Room, Room CG6, on October 15, 2010, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Please stop in to wish Diane well in her retirement!

Fall Ethics Seminar

The RSVP forms for the November 2nd Ethics Seminar were emailed to most, and mailed to some, and are available on the WCBA website.. The deadline for registering is October 25th. Members of the WCBA can attend for no charge.

Members Only Events

At the last Board meeting, WCBA directors and officers determined that we should be more strict regarding the enforcement of membership requirements for attendance at events that are restricted to WCBA members. The first event of this sort, which has been problematic in the past, is the Juvenile Guardian ad Litem seminar in December. It is the intention of the WCBA to contact those who attend the seminar who are not current members. Membership forms will be available at the seminar, bur why wait? If you intend to attend, join the WCBA or renew your membership right now!
