A Word From Your President

Dear Members:

For those of you with CLE reporting requirements after the 1st of the year, our ethics seminar is coming up in November.  Doug Swanson continues to do a great job with this and the program this year will be of the same high caliber you have come to expect.

I would also encourage you to put the holiday party on your calendar for December.  I am hoping that this year's party does not bring another big snowfall, and I hope to see you there.

While my last letters had requested comment and input in what you want out of the local bar, I also want to mention the State Bar.  State Bar President Diane Diel was in attendance at the juror appreciation ceremony earlier this month.  Ms. Diel confirmed what our Board of Governors' representatives have consistently reported - that things in Madison are somewhat contentious and always interesting.  If you have a position on those issues currently before the State Bar, I would suggest you contact one of our Governors, Mike Hausman, Jeff Zirgibel or Sam Benedict.

Very truly yours,

Dan Habeck
President

Waukesha Bar Presents Photograph of First Female Jurors

Members of the Waukesha Bar Association were well represented at the September 3rd Juror Appreciation event.  Your Board graciously agreed to donate a matted and framed 1921 photograph of the first female jurors in Wisconsin to be hung outside of the Jury Assembly Room CG-6 on the ground floor of the courthouse.

September has been declared Juror Appreciation Month statewide and the photo presentation capped the event here in Waukesha.  In addition to your President, Dan Habeck, who presented the photograph, participants included Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson, Judge Jim Kieffer, County Executive Dan Vrakas, County Board Chairman Jim Dwyer, State Bar President Diane Diel, and myself.  Thank you for your generous presentation and for helping to make the event a big success!
 - Carolyn Evenson, Waukesha County Clerk of Circuit Court

(Editor’s Note: Images of the photograph are posted on the WCBA website.)

September 24 CLE Recap

We had 27 members in attendance at our September 24 CLE on disaster recovery and business continuity planning presented by Sally Anderson of WLMIC.  While sobering, her presentation was also an eye-opener for those who attended, and hopefully was a call to action as well.  For those of you who were not able to attend, this is a topic that you should learn more about; you don’t want to see all of your hard work disappear after a disaster.  There are steps you can take!

The WCBA Board is very interested in providing low cost or free CLE for our members and would love to hear from our members who have ideas for subjects and/or speakers.  Please contact any Board officer or member with your ideas. Thanks to member Mary Boehnlein who did approach me with a topic for another session.

Our ever popular and well attended ethics seminar will be held on November 11.  More information will be emailed to our members as we get closer to that date.  As always, it will be free for members, so all are encouraged to update their memberships soon to ensure that you will get emailed notices and be able to attend. You can download the membership form from the opening page of the WCBA website.
