A Word From
Your President
Dear Colleagues:
I want to remind
everyone to submit your membership applications as
soon as possible. The Bar Association free Ethics CLE will be on
November 5th, 2007 in the morning for all paid members.
Details will
follow at the Waukesha County Bar website at www.waukeshabar.org.
Each year the
Bar Association has the right to submit a nomination to
the State Bar for the State Judicial Achievement Awards. The
Judge of
the Year award is for a Judge who exhibits independence and excellence
and is a leader in advancing the quality of justice. A nominee
should
have exceeded the call of his or her judicial office.
The Life time
Jurist Achievement Award honors and individual who has
demonstrated outstanding, long term judicial service during his
or her
years as sitting circuit court judge. The nominee must have
demonstrated high ideals, personal character judicial independence and
excellence during their tenure on the bench. A candidate must
have
served one full term as a circuit court judge.
If any bar
member has a nominee in mind for either award, please contact any board
member.
The Bar Board is
always trying to find new ways to better serve its
members. If any member has a suggestion for a member benefit that
you
feel that bar implement, please contact a board member with your
suggestion.
Sincerely,
Marjorie A. Wendt
President
Board Minutes and
Treasurer’s Report - Thursday, July 26,
2007; 12:00 pm
Attendance: Marjorie Wendt,
President, Judge Davis, past President, Dan Habeck,
President Elect, Doug Swanson, Secretary/Treasurer, Michelle Martin,
Christine
D'Angelo, John Macy, and C. Michael Hausman.
Minutes: The minutes of the May
24, 2007 meeting were approved after a correction was made in the body
of the Charitable Giving and Scholarship Report. The reference to
"Cooperating Congregations of Greater Milwaukee" was corrected to read
"Cooperating Congregations of Greater Waukesha".
Treasurer and Membership Report: As
all members of the Board had not received the July 26, 2007 Treasurer's
and Membership Report prior to the meeting, the vote to approve the
Report was tabled until the August 23, 2007 meeting.
OLD
BUSINESS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS
State Board of Governors:
John Macy reported that no State Board of Governors meeting had taken
place since our last Board of Directors meeting. However, a
meeting is scheduled for the last week of July. No agenda had yet
been presented to the Governors. John Macy did report that he is
on the Executive Board for the 2008 year. Mike Hausman is still
on the Diploma Privilege Committee which is now headed by Steven Levine.
Scriptus/Website: The
next Scriptus is due out in a couple of weeks.
Charitable Giving and
Scholarship:Doug Swanson is the Chairman of the Committee.
Judge Davis will continue to serve on the Committee. Judge Davis
will contact the Cooperating Congregations of Greater Waukesha and
obtain an update addressing how they are utilizing the funds we are
providing. Doug Swanson will continue overseeing the Scholarship
Program to the Marquette Law School and UW Law School.
NEW
BUSINESS
Meeting Dates:
2007-2008 Board of Directors meeting dates have been published in the
Scriptus. Some members have wondered whether or not those are
meetings for the entire membership. It has been explained to them
that they are welcome to attend any of the Board of Directors meetings,
however the monthly meetings are not similar to the annual meetings.
Upcoming Events:
Judge Davis and Marjorie Wendt will oversee the arrangements for the
Annual Judge's Luncheon.
Doug Swanson will oversee the arrangements for the Fall Ethics
Seminar. Christine D'Angelo will replace Carrie Turner
in assisting Doug on this Committee.
Michelle Martin will oversee the December 6, 2007 Holiday event.
Marjorie Wendt, Dan Habeck, and Judge Davis will oversee the
arrangements for the 2008 Awards Dinner.
Dan Habeck will oversee the Spring CLE Seminar and Craig Kuhary will be
added to the Committee.
WLRIS Attorneys:
We have received contact from Britt Bellinger of WLRIS notifying us
that four attorneys who appear on the referral list are not members of
the WCBA. Dan Habeck will send a short note to those four members
explaining that the rules of the WLRIS require that they be members of
the WCBA and leave it up to them to either join the WCBA or allow the
WLRIS to remove them from the referral list.
Chief Judges' Plaques:
Judge Davis raised the issue of funding a project that would
memorialize former Chief Judges with a picture and biographical
information placed on a plaque and then displayed somewhere in the
courthouse. The ceremonial courtroom and the display case were
discussed as possible locations. It is believed the plaques may
cost $40.00 to $50.00 each. Judge Davis will obtain more
information as to the cost and report that at the next meeting.
Old Scriptus Editions:
The issue of preserving the old Scriptus editions has been addressed in
the past. Those editions have been scanned and will be available
on the Bar Association website. Judge Davis is checking into the
alternatives and costs of preserving the original documents.
Wollenzien Open:
The Wollenzien Open was canceled for 2007. It is our belief
that the dwindling participation over the last few years lead to that
cancellation. Many golf courses will not allow a shotgun start as
there are not enough participants involved for that format. We
discussed alternatives such as a Waukesha County Bar Association
related golf outing with benefits going to charity or some other reason
to host a smaller golf outing rather than the three County Bar
Association Wollenzien Open.
The meeting was adjourned by unanimous consent at 12:45 p.m. The next
meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 23, 2007* at 12:00 p.m., Room
G55, Administration Building.
Respectfully submitted,
Douglas E. Swanson, Secretary
*(Editor’s Note)
Next meeting is September 20, 2007
-
Room G-55 of the County Administration Building.
From the
Clerk of Courts
None.
