A Word From Your President

Dear Colleagues:

I would like to pass along information about the Waukesha County representatives to the State Bar Board of Governors.  Waukesha recently was awarded an additional representative. Our three representative are:
     JOHN MACY (262)548-1340 jmacy@ammr.com
     MIKE HAUSMAN (262) 646-5900 mike@cmhausmanlaw.com
     MIKE MORSE (262) 532-4251 mmorse@menomonee-falls.org

There are many issues before the Board of Governors that individual members may want to discuss with these representatives so that our members concerns are addressed.  There are specifics on the Waukesha County Bar Association website about the client protection fund, the issue of multi jurisdictional practice and the diploma privilege.  Please contact any representative with your thoughts and comments.

The  Waukesha County Bar Association board also would like to congratulate Judge J. Mac Davis who received an award from the Mental Health Association.   Judge Davis and his wife were both honored as Outstanding Supporters of the Mental Health Association.  Both Judge Davis and his wife were also past presidents of the association.

The formal invitations for the Bar Christmas party have been mailed and are on the website for your convenience. Please make sure to sign up and attend.  The party will be held on December 6th at the Delafield Brewhaus.

On December 13th, 2007 the bar association will present the next free CLE seminar. The Guardian ad Litem Seminar will be held in the County Board room on the 3rd floor of the courthouse from 8:30 until noon. Information and sign up is available through the Waukesha County Bar Association website.  The next free CLE will be held in the spring in conjunction with the annual meeting.

Sincerely,

Marjorie A. Wendt
President

Minutes:  The Minutes of the August 23, 2007 meeting were approved.

Treasurer and Membership Report: The Membership and Treasurer's Report were distributed and reviewed.  As of September 20, 2007, there are 412 members and membership dues collected to date equal $24,830.00.  The Money Market/Checking Account balance is $15,904.07.  The 12 month CD balance was $13,370.32.   The 24 month CD balance is $13,364.02.

OLD BUSINESS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS

State Board of Governors: Mike Morse provided a report from the recent Board of Governors meeting.

Scriptus/Website: The Scriptus went out on September 20, 2007.  The website is running again.

Charitable Giving  and Scholarship:   Doug Swanson reported that the UW Madison Law School had responded to the request that the Law School Scholarship Applications be posted.  There was no response from Marquette Law School.  The Cooperating Congregations of Waukesha County contacted us to clarify that we had actually been misnaming them.  Judge Davis will follow up with Melony to find out how much we had provided to the Cooperating Congregations of Waukesha County in the past and then a check will be sent to them in that amount.

Other:

The issue of Lexis not paying Country Springs was again raised.  It was determined that we will pay the balance to Country Springs.  Doug Swanson will speak with Melony Howard to find out how much we have already paid to make certain that all costs are accurate and then we will pay the balance.

Judge Davis did present a bill for the Chief Judge Plaques.  We will pay $324.99 to Michael Neimon who has paid for the Plaques.  Information regarding the Chief Judge Plaques will be placed in the next Scriptus.   It was decided that the Plaques would be displayed in the display cabinet at the entrance of the courthouse.

Ethics Seminar:  Doug Swanson reported that the Ethics Seminar will be held on November 5, 2007 at the Brookfield Suites.  Christy D'Angelo is in the process of obtaining speakers.  The Registration Forms will be provided to Danni Caldwell and she will then send an e-mail to the Membership as well as make the Registration Forms available on the Website.  It was determined that we will not actively solicit any vendors for this years seminar although we will invite the Cooperating Congregations of Waukesha County, the particular sections in the Waukesha County Bar and the Lawyer Referral Service to see if they wish to set up tables at the Seminar.

NEW BUSINESS

The State Bar is seeking nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award.  Danni will place this information in the Scriptus.

The Wisconsin Law Journal contacted the Board of Directors to see if we would co-sponsor the Judges' Directory this year.  It will focus on Waukesha County.  There is absolutely no financial cost to the Bar Association so we decided to co-sponsor.

Judge Nettesheim Retirement:  Judge Patrick Snyder is organizing some type of retirement event for Judge Nettesheim.  We discussed the possibilities of doing something to honor Judge Nettesheim.  We discussed having a ceremony at the Judges' Luncheon in January 2008.  We will discuss the matter further at the October 2007 Board of Directors Meeting.

Courthouse Construction Project:  Judge Davis reported that there are meetings regarding the Courthouse Construction Project.  He is the Chair of the Committee.  All meetings are open and we discussed the availability of any Board Members to attend the meetings.  We also discussed contacting the sections to see if anyone is interested.

We discussed inviting the State Bar President to our next Annual Meeting.

The meeting was adjourned by unanimous consent at 1:00 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 12:00 p.m., Room G55, Administration Building. *

Respectfully submitted,
Douglas E. Swanson, Secretary

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES - Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 12:00 p.m.

Attendance:    Marjorie Wendt, President, Dan Habeck, President Elect, Doug Swanson, Secretary/Treasurer, C. Michael Hausman, Craig Kuhary, Michelle Martin, Danni Caldwell, Christy D'Angelo, and John Macy.
Minutes:  The minutes of the September 20, 2007 meeting were approved.

OLD BUSINESS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS

State Board of Governors
John Macy circulated an informational insert which was sent to all attorneys in Waukesha County which set forth the Petitions pending before the Supreme Court which could have an impact in our local practice.  Danni Caldwell will put a copy of the informational insert on the website.

Mike Hausman reported on the Diploma Privilege Committee.  He stated that he and Mike Morse have voiced their opinion that the State should keep the privilege and referenced a Law Review Article which has been written on the topic that is favorable to keeping the Diploma Privilege.

Scriptus/Website:  Danni Caldwell reported that the Scriptus is ready and will be sent.  She also reported that the website is up to date and is running fine.

Ethics Seminar: Doug Swanson reported that all arrangements have been made for the 2007 Ethics Seminar.  Christy D'Angelo is in the process of finalizing the speakers.  Most of the Board Members confirmed that they would be able to arrive early to help with the registration.  Doug reported that he had a meeting scheduled with the people at Brookfield Suites the week prior to the Seminar to confirm the appropriate lay out of the room, registration table, signs being posted, etc.  Michelle Martin will send to Doug contact information for all the section leaders and Doug will then contact them via e-mail to see if they would like to have some type of presentation at the tables.

Judge Becker Portrait: It was raised to our attention by Commissioner Linda Georgeson that the large portrait of Judge Becker needs glass to preserve the portrait.  The Board discussed whether or not the frame and/or the portrait itself is actually amenable to having glass added.  Linda Georgeson will be asked to look into the issue and if it can be done we authorized her to spend up to $200.00 to complete the project.  We also discussed a location to hang the portrait and it was recommended that it be hung someplace in the Juvenile Court.

NEW BUSINESS

Holiday Party:  We had previously discussed having some type of acknowledgment for Judge Nettesheim's retirement at the Holiday Party.  We have learned that he will not be able to attend and therefore we will not pursue that issue any further.  We may revisit the issue of acknowledging Judge Nettesheim at a later event, perhaps the Annual Meeting.

Guardian Ad Litem Seminar:  The upcoming Seminar will focus on issues regarding better communication with kids and juvenile related matters.  The Board approved paying for the printing of the Seminar materials and for breakfast to be provided to the participants as we did last year.  Costs are anticipated to be the same.

Support Staff Luncheon:  A few members of the Bar have raised the issue of attempting to coordinate the introduction of courthouse staff to the support staff.  We discussed whether it would be something that could take place in lieu of entertainment.  The consensus was the entertainment portion of the luncheon is very important and well received and is something that we should definitely keep.  We then discussed whether it would be possible to have both an entertainment section and some type of introduction of the court staff.  Because of the time constraints we thought that might be difficult.  We then discussed assigning tables, placing a judge and his or her support staff together so that the attorney staff would find it easier to meet a particular courthouse staff member.  We discussed allowing law firms to reserve tables and placing placards on the table and then the tables that are not reserved can simply be filled in by the other participants.   John Macy presented an idea for an entertainment involving national presenters who do presentations on movies and law. He has seen some of them and they are very good.  He will get us more information.

Reinhart Boerner Conference Room: Dan Habeck reported that he had been contacted by someone from the Reinhart Boerner Law Firm and went to their new office space in Waukesha.  They have a conference room that they offer for free that will seat 80 to 100 people.  They also have a catering service which of course would be at a cost.  Michelle will contact Tim Nettesheim and decide if this type of information will be presented to the sections.

The Meeting was adjourned by unanimous consent at 1:00 p.m.  The next Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 12:00 p.m., Room G55, Administration Building.*

Respectfully submitted,
Douglas E. Swanson, Secretary

*(Editor’s Note) Next meeting is December 13, 2007 - Room G-55 of the County Administration Building.
