A Word From
Your President
Dear Colleagues:
Please mark your calendars for the upcoming annual
meeting on May 12, 2008. During the lunch hour meeting the Board
will present, for membership approval, a new slate of officer and
directors as well as a proposed budget for 2008-2009. Following
the meeting you will be offered another free CLE opportunity featuring
Ross Kodner. Mark off time for the lunch and a few hours after
that.
Our next social event will be the Spring Awards
dinner on April 26th, 2008 at the Legend County Golf Club in
Wales. The event will honor three individuals for Lifetime
Achievement, Community Service and Distinguished Member. The
honoree names will be posted on the website within one week.
Please plan to come and honor these special individuals.
Following the dinner and the awards presentation, there will be a
casino night for your entertainment.
I want to thank Danni Caldwell and Robyn Schuchardt
for their hard work in running the regional Mock Trial tournament in
February at the Courthouse. Danni and Robyn have spent many hours
over many years on this volunteer effort for the benefit of local high
school children. Please consider volunteering next year at this
event, as tournament judges are always needed.
Lastly, Law Day is May 1st each year. There
are several community service opportunities for Bar members, including
volunteering for a telephone panel. For more information
regarding volunteering, contact a Board member.
Happy Spring.

WCBA Board
Minutes - January 17, 2008
Attendance:
Marjorie Wendt, President, Dan Habeck, President elect, Doug Swanson,
Secretary/Treasurer, Judge Mac Davis, Past President, Christie
D'Angelo, Vicky Schroeder, Craig Kuhary, John Mason, and Danni
Caldwell
Minutes: The
Minutes of the November 15, 2007 meeting were approved.
There was no Meeting in the month of December 2007.
Old Business and Committee
Reports
State Board of Governors: John
Macy reported that the Executive Committee would be meeting in two
weeks. The Board of Governors Meeting is scheduled for one
month. We discussed the Wisconsin Judicial Integrity Committee
and that many attorneys have been upset over the fact that the State
Bar dues are being used for those purposes. We discussed concern
in what should or should not be supported by the State Bar. If
anyone hears of any complaints or is contacted by any of our membership
we were requested to invite those people to contact John Macy.
Scriptus/Website:
Danni Caldwell announced that the next issue of the Scriptus would go
out the following week. She also reported that old copies of the
Scriptus have now been scanned and the original copies are being sent
to the State Historical Society. There was a small issue with the
website but that issue had been fixed and the website was working
appropriately as of the date of the meeting.
New Business
Administrative Assistance
Search: We have received two applications so far for this
position. Both applicants appear to be qualified. We
discussed that rather than opening up this search any further that
Marjorie, Dan, and Doug would meet with the applicants and if for some
reason did not believe that either of the candidates would be
appropriate for the position we would then expand the search.
Judicial Forum: We
agreed that we would hold one Judicial Forum and invite candidates for
both the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court races. We discussed
holding the Forum in the Ceremonial Court Room. Marjorie will act
as the moderator. Judge Davis will contact the candidates and
follow up on the scheduling of the Forum.
Support Staff Luncheon:
The Support Staff Luncheon is scheduled for February 4, 2008 at the
Country Springs Conference Center. We determined that we would
invite the candidates for the State Bar, Court of Appeals, and Supreme
Court. We determined not to provide any time for speeches but we
would introduce the candidates as well as all of the judicial members
in attendance.
Speaker Presentation:
We did receive a one hour portion of the State Bar Program which was
put on by some "humorous" lawyer. Vicki and Marjorie will review
the DVD. If we want to purchase it it would cost
$500.00. They will let us know whether or not the
presentation would be appropriate for the support staff luncheon or any
other event.
Awards Dinner: The
2008 Awards Dinner will be held in April at the Legends of Brandy
Brook. Dan Habeck, Judge Davis, and Marjorie Wendt will determine
the award recipients. At this time we will need to solicit names
for the nominees. The decision needs to be made so the nominees
can be contacted in plenty of time to make arrangements to attend the
dinner if at all possible.
Membership: Judge
Davis raised the concern as to whether or not our membership numbers
were decreasing. Doug Swanson stated that he will review the old
membership reports and summarize the membership numbers from the last
few years and provide that summary at the next meeting.
The Meeting was adjourned by unanimous consent at 1:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Douglas E. Swanson, Secretary/Treasurer

Condolences
As most of you know, Judge David Dancey passed away
on March 8th. His funeral was on Saturday, March 15. One hopes that the
song “Danny Boy” was played at the funeral; the memory of his singing
this song at the Awards Dinner at which he was honored by the WCBA
still brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye. He will be missed.
Volunteering Opportunity
The Supreme Court appoints lawyers and public members to a variety of
Supreme Court boards, including the OLR, the Board of Administrative
Oversight, the OLR district committees, the BBE, and various other
committees and boards. From time to time, the Court runs short of
potential appointees, whether lawyers or public members. At this time,
the Court is seeking names of lawyers interested in serving on the
various court appointed committees and boards. Below is a list of
State Bar districts needing lawyer volunteers. Please publicize this
list if possible or if you know of individuals who may be interested in
serving, please contact them. For a list of Supreme Court Boards
and Committees, go to: http://www.wicourts.gov/about/committees/index.htm
Interested lawyers should contact Sara Foster of the Director of State
Courts office: 608-266-1298, sara.foster@wicourts.gov
