A Word From Your President

Dear Fellow Members:

I hope this letter finds all of you doing well and enjoying summer.  I want to remind you that if you have not done so already, please complete your annual membership application for 2011-2012.
Please also complete the applicable section forms.  If you need another or an additional packet, please go to waukeshabar.org and download the summer mailing.

As you will recall, as part of the summer mailing, there was information regarding a proposed Litigation Section.  The letter asked that members who were interested in a Litigation Section notify Stephanie Erickson of same so the WCBA could gauge the interest in a Litigation Section.  I am pleased to announce that as of the writing of this letter the WCBA has almost thirty members who are interested in the section and, therefore, the WCBA is going to form a new section.  If you are interested in the section but have not notified Stephanie Erickson of your interest, please do so.  Again, you are able to download her information from the summer mailing packet on the WCBA website.  An email will go out to all interested parties notifying them of the date and time of the first Litigation Section meeting.  That information will also be posted on the WCBA website.

Please look for future information on the website/in the Scriptus with regard to the placement of wireless printers at the Waukesha County Courthouse.  These printers will be available for use by the WCBA members.  All of the details have not yet been finalized, so look for updates later this summer.

Also, please look at the website/in the Scriptus for dates for the Ethics Seminar and the Guardian ad Litem Seminar.  The dates and locations of these events have been confirmed.

I hope all of you have a happy and healthy summer.

Very truly yours,
Michelle E. Martin
President

From the Clerk of Courts

Investiture

Judge Lloyd V. Carter will hold his formal Investiture Ceremony at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2011, in the Ceremonial Courtroom (C215). Anyone may attend.

Circuit Courts Begin Testing New Courtroom Audio and Visual Presentation Tools

Phase One of a Courtroom Technology Upgrade will soon be complete.  Two courtrooms, Judge Kieffer's criminal courtroom and Judge Van De Water's family courtroom will have Audio, Visual Presentation, and Video Conferencing software and hardware installed, as part of a county funded capital project designed to improve and expand the communication and case presentation capabilities of all courtrooms and hearing rooms.  Installation in both test courtrooms will be complete by the end of July.

Technology included in the new A/V systems installed in each area include sound amplification and microphone improvements, new assistive listening devices, case presentation tools including document projection and visual presentation tools, and capabilities for attorneys to bring in and utilize their personal laptops and smart devices like tablet PC's to present audio and electronic images or video, real-time image annotation, and multi-camera video conferencing tools.

The project is being coordinated at the direction of Chief Judge J. Mac Davis and Clerk of Circuit Court Kathleen Madden. The two pilot courtrooms will live-test the new systems for a period of 60 to 90 days to see how everything works in real life and then to "tweak" the new systems as necessary to re-work and address problems or improvements identified prior to rolling out the new systems to all 15 remaining venues.

Similarly, after installation in the two test courtrooms is complete, a series of orientation and training sessions beginning with Court staff and Court officials is planned.  Following internal training - a series of orientation, system training, and "brain-storming" sessions are being planned which will include our business partners such as the District Attorney, Corporation Counsel, State Public Defender, local WCBA members and other interested practicing attorneys. This will also occur over the next 60 to 90 days. The remaining courtrooms and hearing rooms will be upgraded between January and September of next year.

Additional information on planned Orientation and Training sessions will be communicated in the near future via the Scriptus, the WCBA website, our County Circuit Courts website, and by email to WCBA members, with the assistance of Danni Caldwell.  Please stay tuned!  We are very excited about these improvements and look forward to getting everyone involved in applying and using these new tools.

Thanks!
