A Word From Your President

Dear Members:

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful and peaceful holiday season.  The new decade will likely bring more changes.  Brett Favre is gone (maybe). We can expect there being different challenges and opportunities in this new year.  There are several judicial races which will affect our membership.

I would encourage everyone to be involved in as many ways as possible with our bar and judiciary.  We should all be proud of our profession and take whatever steps we can to ensure the integrity of the work that is done on behalf of our clients and the judicial system.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the February 9, 2010 Support Staff Luncheon.  As always, please do not hesitate to contact myself or any member of the Board of Directors with ideas, questions or concerns regarding your Bar Association.

    Very truly yours,
Doug

Treasurer's and Membership Report: The Treasurer’s and Membership Report was reviewed.  There were no issues regarding the Report.

Old Business and Committee Reports

State Board of Governors' Report: Jeff Zirgibel provided the Board with an update with regard to the Board of Governors. Specifically the update was with regard to the survey regarding the mandatory versus voluntary bar association as well as the nominations for the State Bar President.

Scriptus/Website: Danni Caldwell gave an update on the status of the Scriptus. She indicated that the next Scriptus was going out on October 22, 2009.

Events Calendar: The Board reviewed the Events Calendar and discussed the Ethics Seminar (see below). In addition, the Board discussed the Holiday Party. Invitations will go out in mid-November. There was a discussion as to whether or not increase the charge to members for attending the Holiday Party. It was decided to make that decision once the cost of the food is reviewed to see what, if any, increase there is in those prices.

Ethics Seminar: The Ethics Seminar is scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Brookfield Suites Hotel. All of the speakers are currently slated. All of the materials have been submitted to the State for approval for the credits.

Law School Scholarships:   Doug Swanson informed the Board that applications have been submitted by various law students. The application deadline is October 26, 2009. The goal is that the scholarships will be awarded prior to November 9, 2009.

Tax Returns - Gaylene Stingl:   Doug Swanson informed the Board that everything has been submitted to Gaylene to file taxes.

Plaque Status:   Danni Caldwell informed the Board that the remaining plaques are updated and hanging in the Courthouse.

New Business

State Bar President-Elect - Nomination: Jeff Zirgibel explained to the Board the status of the nomination process and how the various areas of the State are considered in terms of rotation (policy versus practice). Jeff informed the Board that he is advocating for a nominee from Waukesha County and is speaking with various attorneys as to their interest in the nomination. He will continue to advocate this position.

Update - Waukesha County Security & Facilities Committee:  Michelle Martin gave an update with regard to the Security & Facilities Committee meeting which was held on October 19, 2009. Specifically, she informed the Board that the County was working on a plan with regard to the H1N1 pandemic. She also informed the Board that the Criminal Section of the Bar is further advocating for security passes for the Courthouse security system for attorneys. It was decided that the Bar will conduct a poll as to whether or not its members want the Bar to continue to advocate for the card system, with the understanding that this was tried in the past and the Bar was unsuccessful.

Bench - Bar Liaison Committee: Doug Swanson informed the Board that Sam Benedict has resigned from the Bench-Bar Committee. Pat Conklin will be the chair of the committee. Craig Kuhary gave an update with regard to the Bench-Bar Committee. He will also address the security pass issue with the Committee at its next meeting in 2010.
