A Word From Your President

Dear Fellow Members:

The Guardian ad Litem seminar and the Holiday Party were huge successes. Thank you to all who made them great events. We hope to see you next at the Annual Judges' Update Luncheon which is on January 9, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at the Milwaukee Marriott West.

The Board has been busy planning events for the first half of 2012. In doing so, the Board decided not to have the Awards Dinner this Spring. There are several reasons for doing so, including the cost and low attendance. Instead, the awards are going to be given at the Annual Meeting on May 10, 2012.

The Board has been considering ideas for additional social events. Currently the Board has two events in the works, so stay tuned for more details. If anyone has any other ideas for social events, please contact me or any Board member.

For those of who are interested in purchasing a bar portrait, they will be available until January 31, 2012. Please access the website for more information.

WCBA Board Minutes - Thursday, November 17, 2011

In Attendance: Danni Caldwell, Craig Kuhary, Lori Fabian, Michelle Martin, Linda Coyle, Sarah Ponath, Sharron Stolpa and Kim Haines.

Absent: Sue Herro, Christy D'Angelo and Ron Sonderhouse.

Call to Order: The meeting was duly called to order by President Michelle Martin.

Minutes of the October 20, 2011 Board of Directors Meeting: November minutes were approved.

Treasurer's Report: The Treasurer's and Membership Report was reviewed and approved.

State Board of Governors' Report: Kim Haines reported that the next Board of Governors meeting is December 2, 2012.

Scriptus/Website: Danni Caldwell reported that the Scriptus will be going out next week. Section information was updated and added to the website. Discussion was had regarding website management. Craig Kuhary will follow up with the Milwaukee County Bar Association to see who they use for website management, and whether we look into allowing members to register online for county bar seminars and events.

Ethics Seminar Recap: Sue Herro and& Christy D’Angelo received a feedback letter from the presenters. Feedback seemed to be overall positive. 210 signed up to attend the event.

GAL Seminar 12/8/11: Mike Kaiser is organizing the GAL seminar. Kim Haines and Linda Coyle have volunteered again to be certain those in attendance are all WCBA members.

Holiday Party 12/8/11: Linda Coyle has shopped for gifts and will be following up with Delafield Brewhaus regarding the menu. Michelle will be running the door prizes at the event.

Bar Grant for Printer: Linda Coyle reported that the tables, printers, special wiring and special drill bit have been purchased, and we are just waiting for the drill bit to be delivered. Once delivered, everything will be set up.

Legal Action of Wisconsin Board: Ron English will serve on the board. Michelle Martin will follow up with Ron and Jake Schwei.

Annual Awards Dinner 2012: Discussion regarding the Spring Awards Dinner was had. We discussed still giving the awards, but presenting them at the Annual Meeting in May. Instead of a dinner event, we discussed having a Brewer’s tailgate to try something new. Discussion was had regarding a new award “Rookie of the Year” which would be presented at the Brewer’s tailgate. We will seek input from the members via the Scriptus if they have any other ideas for something new for the social event in the spring.

New Business

Fridays At Four: The Racine County Bar Association has a networking event wherein the last Friday of every month, a different law firm in the area holds a networking event at their office. The Board discussed this as being a possible social networking event for our members. We will discuss approaching various law firms to host the first few events. We will also gather more information from the Racine County Bar to get an idea as to how many members attend the events.

Judicial Achievement Awards – State Bar: The deadline to nominate a judge is 1/27/12. Kim Haines will look into the history of past nominees/awardees to discuss at the next meeting.

Mentorship Program: Kim Haines and Tom Schober are members of the Law Office Management Section, and Kim discussed the idea of bringing a mentorship program to the WCBA. The program was started in Dane County and is very successful. It is possible to obtain a bar grant for the program. Kim will look into the bar grant further.

Small & Solo Firm Update: Kim Haines indicated that the Solo & Small firm State Bar Section is willing to come to local bars to discuss issues, provide a presentation. We discussed this as being a possible topic for the annual meeting.

Adjournment: A motion was made, seconded and adopted to adjourn.

Next Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for December 15, 2011 at 12:00 noon in Room G55 of the Waukesha County Administration Building.*

Holiday Greetings and Courthouse Hours

All of us in the Circuit Courts wish you health and happiness for the upcoming holiday season and great success in the coming year!

In observation of the holidays, the Courthouse will be closed December 23rd, 26th,and 30th, and January 2nd.

Waukesha County Criminal Justice Collaborating Council

Judge J. Mac Davis invites all WCBA members to view the CJCC newsletter available on the CJCC website.

Judicial Rotation

There is an Judicial Rotation scheduled for January 27, 2012, effective on Monday, January 30, 2012.

Judge Ralph Ramirez will rotate to Family Division courtroom C370

Judge Lee S. Dreyfus, Jr. will rotate to Civil Division courtroom C278.
