A Word From Your President

Dear Fellow Members:

I hope you all had a fun and relaxing summer and are now ready for all of the activities that fall brings us.  The WCBA Board has been active in setting the dates for its various events.  The Ethics Seminar is scheduled for November 9, the GAL Seminar is scheduled for December 8, and the Holiday Party is also scheduled for December 8.  Please look at the Scriptus and/or the website (waukeshabar.org) for specifics on these events.  The Board is also close to finalizing the dates and locations for the Annual Judges' Update, the Support Staff Luncheon, and the Annual Meeting.  Please continue to review the Scriptus and website for further information.

As you may or may not know, the County is in the process of updating the technology in the courtrooms.  Currently, the County is using Judge Kieffer's and Judge Van De Water's courtrooms as test cases.  Once the County has worked out all of the logistics in those two courtrooms, additional courtrooms will be updated on a rolling basis.  Eventually, all of the courtrooms will be updated.
Because it is important that the lawyers who are going to be using the technology in the courtrooms are familiar with it, the County will be hosting numerous training sessions which will give lawyers the opportunity to review and learn the new technology.  Once those training sessions are established, we will let you know.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me or any member of the Board.

Very truly yours,

Michelle E. Martin
President

Treasurer's Report:    The Treasurer's and Membership Report was reviewed and approved.

State Board of Governors' Report: Kim Haines reported the new State Bar President was sworn in on June 8, 2011.  Sam Benedict will be serving on the Executive Committee.  Sam Benedict and Jeff Zirgibel's terms expire in 2012, and therefore Waukesha County will need 2 individuals to fill their slates (elections are in April, office begins 7/1/12).  The next meeting is in September.

Scriptus/Website: Danni Caldwell has updated the Scriptus as needed.  Summer mailing information has been updated and linked on the website.  The Scriptus should go out on July 25, 2011.

WCBA Sections Issues: Michelle Martin and Lori Fabian met in May to discuss and propose language for a social media policy.  Proposed language was reviewed by the Board, and Lori will provide an updated version for approval at the August Board meeting.

Bar Grant for Printer:  Linda Coyle will order 3 wireless printers to be placed in each family courtroom.  Every Bar member will have a code to utilize the printers.  Linda will also follow up with Judge Davis and talk with the family court clerks to let them know when this will be implemented.  We will need to provide an update to the State Bar by 9/1/11 regarding the progress of this project.

Bar Association Room:  No update at this time.

2011-2012 Events Schedule:  Location of events and status of events was discussed.

    1.    Ethics Seminar - 11/9/11 at Brookfield Suites; registration 8am-8:30am; Seminar 8:30am to noon.  Dan Murray agreed to speak at the event.  Sue Herro will continue looking for speakers.  Goal is to obtain the speakers and materials by October.  Sue Herro and Christy D'Angelo will be responsible for coordinating this event.

    3.    Christmas Party - 12/8/11 - Delafield Brewhaus.  Linda Coyle will be responsible for obtaining the gifts given at the event.
    4.    Spring Awards Dinner - Date and Location still TBD.  Christy D'Angelo and Michelle Martin will be responsible for coordinating this event.  Discussion regarding new awards was had, and it will be determined by the end of this fall what additional awards we may give out.
    5.    Annual Meeting, Judge's Luncheon, Support Staff Luncheon likely all to be held at the Marriott, final dates TBD.  Christy D'Angelo and Michelle Martin will be responsible for coordinating these events.

New Business

    1.    Litigation Section was discussed.  There were approximately 30 members interested in joining this section.  Based on this interest, we will move forward with the section, lead by Stephanie Erickson.  Michelle Martin will address this in her President's Letter.
    2.    Danni Caldwell forwarded an email regarding Lexus Nexus asking to have a link on our website.  Board denied this request.
    3.    Craig Kuhary discussed with Doug Hoffer (chair of the Young Lawyer's Division) how to possibly get more young members involved.  Craig will talk with Doug to have Doug submit a proposal to the Board.

Adjournment: A motion was made, seconded and adopted to adjourn.

Respectfully submitted,
Lori J. Fabian
Secretary/Treasurer

Next Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for September 22, 2011 at 12:00 noon in Room G55 of the Waukesha County Administration Building.*
