A Word From Your President

Dear Members:

I hope you are enjoying your summer and have had an opportunity to take some time off and relax. I find it hard to believe that my kids will be going back to school already, although I think it's about time!

As many of us transition back into the school year, the courthouse is also in a state of transition. We have two new judges joining our fabulous judiciary. I encourage everyone to take any opportunity you are given to meet and get to know the Honorable Mark Gundrum and the Honorable Kathleen Stilling. We are lucky, in this county, to have such intelligent and talented judges. I look forward to seeing how Judge Gundrum's and Judge Stilling's various backgrounds enhance and compliment those who are already serving.

The renovations to the courthouse building are underway. The major moving of structural components is set to begin this fall. It is not anticipated that this construction will affect parking or courtroom activities other than possible noise interference. Please note that there have already been some changes to the types of cases heard in certain courtrooms. Please check your court notices and CCAP to make sure that you are headed to the right room! I will try to keep you all advised of any developments or concerns regarding the construction.

Finally, the State Bar of Wisconsin has made some changes to their CLE courses, including redesigning the Annual Convention. Please see the attached information explaining some of those changes and where you can go for more information.

As always, your Board of Directors is here to serve you, please let me know if there is anything we can do to support you in your practice of law.

Very truly yours,

Christy D’Angelo

New Business

Ethics Seminar.  Doug Swanson informed the Board that the Ethics Seminar is scheduled for November 2, 2010, at the Brookfield Suites Hotel.

2010 Bar Association Member Portraits.
The Board discussed whether or not the Bar should have a portrait prepared in 2010.  In the past, the portraits have been completed every decade.  The last one was finished in 2005 instead of 2000 due to an unforeseeable issue.  However, the consensus of the Board is that the Bar Association go back to having portraits completed at the beginning/end of every decade.  As such, Christy will begin looking for photographers to set up this process.

Dates/Locations for Other Meetings/Events.
The Board discussed some potential dates/locations for other meetings/events.  Christy is going to look into the Marriott for the Awards Dinner, the Judge's Luncheon and the Support Staff Luncheon.  The Ethics Seminar is already set for the Brookfield Suites, and the Christmas Party is set for the Delafield Brewhaus.   With regard to the Annual Meeting, the Board will look into places that will accommodate the breakout rooms.

Policy Regarding Use of Website for Non-Waukesha County Bar Association Events.
The Board reviewed the current policy that was established in October of 2004.  The Board determined that the current policy does not need to be amended.

Respectfully submitted,

Michelle E. Martin, Secretary/Treasurer

WCBA Display Cabinet Update

Judge Davis took it on himself to solve the mystery of the photo in the display cabinet and by using the resources of several of our older current and former members, has come up with an almost complete roster of those pictured.  Please contact Danni Caldwell if you can identify the three remaining mystery members in the photo.  Thanks, Judge Davis!

Fall Ethics Seminar

It was decided at the last WCBA Board meeting that the RSVP forms for the November 2 Ethics Seminar should go out soon.  Look for an email or snail mail (if you haven’t provided us with an email address) with registration information the first week of September.

And, Speaking of Email....

Each time an email is sent to our members, numerous addresses cause the emails to be undeliverable.  Most of the time it is due to a spam setting on the email client on the members’ end.  Sometimes it is because the email has been changed and we have not been notified.  And sometimes, it is because the member’s email box is full.

Please make sure that we have your current email address, and that you have set your email application to recognize WCBA as a safe sender. If you have an email box that is full, and is therefore rejecting new emails, you are probably hopeless, so we’ve got no advice for you that isn’t obvious!

Member Composite Portrait

As you may have read in the minutes, the WCBA Board determined that our association should get back to portraits taken at the end of a decade year, e.g. 2010, 2020.  To that end, a photographer has been contracted, and dates for photo sessions for our current members will be set in late 2010 and at our Holiday Party and at the Judges’ Update Luncheon in early January, 2011. As those dates become certain, more information will be shared so that you can determine the best time for your photo to be taken.  Members will have the ability to order individual photos or copies of the composite photo, at their cost. WCBA funds the composite photo, framing and glass and, as with previous composite photos, the 2010 photo will be hung in a Waukesha County courtroom.
