A Word From
Your President
Dear Members:
I hope each of
you had a very enjoyable and relaxing summer. As we begin the new
year for the Waukesha County Bar Association I am excited about the
continuing growth of our organization. While many of you have
been a part of this association for countless years, we continue to
receive new applications for membership. On behalf of the Board
of Directors, I welcome all new members and look forward to developing
our relationship with you. We also look forward to renewing our
friendships with our long standing members.
I would like to
invite you to contact any member of the Board of Directors with issues,
questions or concerns you may have. We are committed to assisting
each of you in any way that we can. We also are interested in
developing new programs which would benefit our membership. We
will continue to provide a wide variety of services and welcome your
input for both established and new ideas.
The Board of
Directors meets on a monthly basis and the schedule for our meetings is
posted on our website. All members are welcome to attend any
meeting. We also welcome you to contact us with Agenda items
prior to any meeting. As we all know, communication is the key to
any good relationship. I look forward to meeting all new members
and continuing to work with the current members of our organization
over the next year.
Very truly
yours,
Doug
WCBA Board
Minutes - Thursday, May 21,
2009
Attendance:
Daniel Habeck, President; Doug Swanson, President-Elect; Christy
D'Angelo, Secretary/Treasurer; Marjorie Wendt, Past President; Danni
Caldwell, Michelle Martin, Craig Kuhary, Linda Van de Water and Sharron
Stolpa.
Minutes: Minutes
from the April 23, 2009, board meeting were approved.
Treasurer’s and Membership
Report: 481 membership applications had been received for the
2008-2009 membership year. The Treasurer's report was received and
approved.
Old Business and Committee
Reports
State Board of Governors:
Nothing to report.
Scriptus/Website: Danni will be sending out the Scriptus next
week. Next issue will not be out until August, 2009.
Budget: It was held on May 2, 2009, at The Legends.
Turnout was very low. We had 71 responses and 65 people attended the
event. Feedback was given by some members on the lack of participation
by members of the bar and what we could do to increase member
participation at events. The Board discussed the format of the event,
noting that it had been the same for several years. We will discuss, in
the fall, whether or not to change the event in the hopes of attracting
more participation.
Annual Meeting and CLE:
The Waukesha County Bar Association Annual Meeting was held on May 14,
2009, at the Radisson Hotel. This event was very well attended compared
to the past few years. The section meetings went very well and were
well received. The Board felt that the Radisson did a nice job and was
a nice change of location. We hope to have more of the sections commit
to holding a CLE or section meeting following the annual meeting again
next year.
Law Day: Tera Nehring
from the Family Court Self-Help Center organized a month of free
seminars open to the public throughout the month of May. There were a
number of lawyers who volunteered to help with this event, however,
community interest was lacking, so many of the sessions were cancelled.
Thanks to everyone who offered their assistance.
Directors Insurance Coverage:
Will be carried over to the next meeting.
YLD Clothing Drive:
Concludes on May 22, 2009. Thank you to everyone who donated to this
worthy cause.
Bar Grant Proposal:
The State Bar denied the application for a grant for the 180 Juvenile
Diversion Program. The State Bar felt there was not enough involvement
in the program by the members of the Waukesha County Bar Association
and the money would not be used to start a new program but to assist a
program that already exists.
New Business
Budget:
2008-2009 Actual Budget and 2009-2010 proposed budgets were submitted
for Board review. The Board has requested that separate line items be
created in the budget for Spring CLE/Annual Meeting and Judge's Update
Luncheon.
Immigration Law CLE:
Catholic Charities and Archdiocese of Milwaukee had requested to offer
our members a 3 credit CLE course on Immigration Law. The Board did not
feel that we had enough members to support such a lengthy CLE program.
Summer Mailing: The
Board finalized and approved the materials for the Summer membership
mailing. It will be forwarded to the members in the next few weeks.
Supreme Court Committees:
They are looking for members from our district (District 6) to
volunteer to participate in various committees. They have indicated
that there are very few lawyer volunteers at this time. If interested
in getting involved in one of these committees, please check out the
Waukesha County Bar Association website: www.waukeshabar.org for more
information.
The meeting was adjourned by unanimous consent at 12:50 p.m. The
next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 12:00 p.m.
Room G55, Administration Building.
Respectfully submitted,
Christine D'Angelo, Secretary/Treasurer
Editor's Note:
The next WCBA Board meeting is August
27, 2009 - Room
G-55
of the County Administration Building.

Courtroom Technology Update!
The county's Department of Administration has
assisted my office and the Circuit Courts in purchasing some new
digital audio and visual equipment for purposes of enhancing the
playback or presentation of evidence to the court. This portable unit
is designed to give the courts and court participants some familiarity
with these technologies in advance of a larger technology project
designed to upgrade the sound and presentation technology in all of the
courtrooms and hearing rooms planned in 2010-2011. Features of the
mobile presentation unit include: 1) the ability to play DVD/VHS media,
2) a document camera that can be used to present/project physical
exhibits, and 3) a hookup for an attorney to bring in and utilize their
own laptop to present information from a wide variety of electronic
documents including Powerpoint, Word/Excel, and various other
video/sound files and formats. The unit also includes six display
monitors (three 50" HD TVs and three 24" LCD monitors), and may also
project images or presentations to a large HD compatible projection
screen.
To ensure the highest level of use and to minimize
instances where the equipment does not perform as intended, attorneys
who wish to use the equipment in court will need to be trained and
become familiar with this new equipment. If you are interested in
receiving a demonstration and hands-on training of the exhibit
presentation equipment, please contact Circuit Court Computer
Coordinator Zack Tremaine at 262-896-8250.
