A Word From Your President

Dear Members:

We are pleased to announce the Bar Association's 2009 award winners:

Distinguished Member Award        E. John Raasch
        Community Service Award        Michael Hasslinger
Lifetime Achievement Award        Charles I. Phillips

The Spring Awards Dinner will be held Saturday, May 2 at The Legend Country Club in Wales; you will receive a separate invitation from the Bar.

Our Annual Meeting will be held Thursday, May 14 at the Radisson-Pewaukee.  The speaker will be Diane Diel, State Bar President.  One change from past years is that the Bar will cover the cost of lunch for all attendees.  A second change is that we are working in conjunction with our sections, which will be conducting meetings and/or continuing legal education immediately after the lunch.  At present, the Young Lawyers Section will have its meeting but no CLE; the Family Law Section will be presenting a CLE by Attorney Dayten Hanson who will speak on tax and bankruptcy issues; the Real Estate Section will be presenting a CLE by Attorney Dan Stevens regarding residential real estate causes of action; and the Probate & Estate Planning Section will have a CLE concerning patient rights and patient advocacy provided through the State of Wisconsin Nursing Home Ombudsman Program.  You can contact the sections directly for more information.

Finally, we are participating in the State Bar's professional clothing drive.  You can help give someone else a second chance by donating your clean, interview-appropriate clothing.  Kathleen Madden and the Clerk of Courts Office is generously assisting and drop-offs may be made to Alice Whitmore at the Courthouse, Room 108.

Very truly yours,

Dan Habeck

Clothing Drive

As Dan Habeck noted, we’ve joined forces with the Clerk of Courts and the State Bar Association to collect gently used, professional clothing to be distributed to unemployed individuals to use for interviewing for employment. If you have clothing that may help the cause, please bring it to the Waukesha county Courthouse, room 108 before May 22.

Free CLE Opportunities - May 14, 2009

Please attend our Annual Meeting on May 14 for a FREE lunch, a presentation by our State Bar president Diane Diehl and some free CLE provided by our sections.  You need not be a member of a section to attend and take part in their CLE presentations.  Did I mention that lunch is FREE?

Just don’t go to the Country Springs and expect to find us there - we’ve moved this event to the Radisson-Pewaukee, I-94 and Hwy 164, behind the Thunderbay Grille.

Please send section news and information to Michelle Martin at mmartin@murnlaw.com or Danni Caldwell at wcba1@waukeshabar.org.

Website Changes

If you had trouble accessing our website in late March, please accept my apologies.  We shifted our webhosting to a different provider, and there was an unavoidable downtime while this process took place.  All is well now, but if you notice any broken links, outdated materials or any other problems, please let me know.

Proposed Revised WCBA By-Laws

The WCBA Board has considered and proposed changes to the WCBA By-laws.  They are available on the WCBA website for member perusal.  If you have any concerns or questions about the By-laws, please contact any WCBA Board officer or member before the annual meeting.  A vote on the proposed By-laws will occur at the annual meeting.
